On Thursday 17th September, Chris attended a conference for procurement professionals at the Hyatt in Melbourne. The Chartered Institute of Procurement and Supply is the world’s largest procurement organisation with over 94,000 members in 150 countries. They are best known for the Purchasing Managers’ Indices, key economic indicators used by the Bank of England and organisations all over the world. They also spearhead the fight against slave labour and promote buying from indigenous communities.

Chris Hepworth signed copies of the Sleepwalker Legacy at the conference.

I remember as a child heading off to the cinema and being thrilled by the latest cowboy and Indian movies. I was brought up on a diet of John Wayne and Clint Eastwood classics and looked forward to the timely arrival of the seventh cavalry who would inevitably save the day late in the film.

The Native Americans were inevitably portrayed as cruel and primitive and cast as the bad guys who stood in the way of westward expansion and progress. In the Sleepwalker Legacy I have made some attempt to redress the balance and highlight their plight without underplaying the brutality of some of the encounters in which these noble warriors were involved in the 1800s.

In conducting my research into the Anglo American war of 1812, I was astounded at the massive role played by Tecumseh and his pan-tribal confederation of Native Americans in securing the independence of (Upper) Canada after the unsuccessful invasion by American troops.

He won the battle of Detroit in 1812 and was offered the rank of brigadier general in the British army. As a reward for the support of the Indian confederacy the British wished to create a large “neutral” Indian state that would cover much of Ohio, Indiana, and Michigan. It was the zenith of Native American influence and power. Unfortunately for the confederation the British, worn out by the long Napoleonic wars were unable to deliver these aims at the 1814 peace conference in Ghent. This failure proved disastrous for the tribesmen and over the next eighty years they lost virtually all of their ancestral lands to the white settlers and were reduced to scratching a living on poor quality tribal reservations.

Tecumseh never had a daughter, but if he had I would like to think that my character Nova the warrior princess would have made him proud. Nova is the love interest for the main character George Napier and a gifted female warrior. Her tragic fictional life is supposed to symbolise the plight of her proud warrior people as their lands were stripped from them and their way of life destroyed.

Tecumseh was not just a heroic warrior, he was a gifted orator and we are lucky that many of his fine words were recorded. Two hundred years later they resonate through time and evoke a feeling of awe in those that read them. I will let Tecumseh finish this posting for me and I hope you find them an inspiring way to live your life:

“Live your life so that the fear of death can never enter your heart…Love your life, perfect your life, and beautify all things in your life. Seek to make your life long and in the service of your people…”

“Always give a word or a sign of salute when meeting or passing a friend, even a stranger, when in a lonely place. Show respect to all people and grovel to none. When you arise in the morning give thanks for the food and for the joy of living. If you see no reason for giving thanks, the fault lies only in yourself…”

“When it comes your time to die, be not like those whose lives are filled with the fear of death, so that when time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song and die like a hero going home.”

The central relationship in the Sleepwalker Legacy is that between Sam Jardine and his boss Rachael Beckett. Sam is besotted with Rachael, his CFO and the granddaughter of Napier & Beckett and future leader of one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world. But his relationship with her is also driven by his respect for her drive, ambition and her ability to command the loyalty of her staff. With the magic of fiction I was able to inject a large dose of sexual tension into the relationship and yet the professional dynamic of female boss and male employee remains at the core of the book. Because this hierarchy is still relatively new in business, it is a rich area for an author to explore and hopefully one that is fascinating for the reader to consider.

When I first started work in the 1980s female managers were a rare commodity. They existed, but mainly where they had specialised technical gifts, had an extraordinary degree of mental toughness or were working in roles considered suitable at the time for women in industries such as healthcare, hospitality or retail. There was certainly an undercurrent that men were innately more suited to the leadership positions particularly in manufacturing and heavy industry. The 1980s was an era of the scary boss who ruled by fear and who was well connected at the golf club or the ‘Lodge’.

I remember my first female boss in the 1990’s when, like a lot of men I had to adapt to a new and unfamiliar workplace realty when the directions were just as likely to come from a woman as from a man. Then just like the buses, I encountered three or four female bosses in quick succession as I moved roles during the formative years of my career. It was quite a revelation that just like the traditional male, I realised that they came in varying degrees of capability and they were quite often much better than their male counterparts.

My particular observations at the time, for what they are worth, were that female leaders had to work harder to earn the same amount of respect as the men. These early pioneers were sometimes beset by feelings of insecurity and doubt before they settled into their role as capable and inspirational managers. Furthermore, while males automatically assumed that respect came with the job based on their innate sense of hierarchy, women would seek regular signs of trustworthiness from their staff. When the staff proved their loyalty, the female boss would repay them by developing a positive team environment hard to match among their male peers. These are all generalisations of course and I am frequently reminded how dangerous such observations can be.

While it has taken some time, I have noticed a swing in attitudes at work. Domineering bosses, whether male or female are out of favour while those with problem solving abilities and high levels of emotional intelligence are on the rise. This is leading to workplaces that are more productive and engaging for the staff and one that utilises the particular talents of women leaders better than they did a few decades ago. On the other side of the ledger, social attitudes still expect women to be the primary carers and this remains an issue for many women on the management trajectory.

The workplace of today is on the threshold of seismic shift in attitudes to women as leaders. From my own experience I can see a bubble of talented young women emerging from the universities and into graduate trainee and middle management positions in all industries. They have a wealth of female role models to emulate and who are comfortable in their positions of influence. In the future there will be as many women executives as men and it will be a good thing that business will have harnessed this untapped resource that was previously ignored. It is an environment in which I hope my own twelve year old daughter will thrive when she enters the workforce.

As a male leader of some experience in my chosen profession I have the opportunity and responsibility to encourage aspiring young women to apply for leadership positions. My duty is to ensure that the very best candidates are always selected from amongst the range of diverse applicants regardless of any unconscious bias that I may have built up over the last three decades at work.

Rachael Beckett is the result of my experience of female bosses and is a complex blend of the half dozen female leaders I have had the pleasure of working for so far in my career. She is my favourite character and she gives the Sleepwalker Legacy much of its intrigue. I wanted to make her as real as possible and not become a Wonder Woman or a Cruella De Vil caricature. Hence she has all the strengths and complexities of a modern female boss although I have taken these to the extreme for the sake of a good read. I hope you enjoy reading about her as much as I enjoyed developing her character and I would welcome comments from those in the same situation as Sam or Rachael.

“I’m Geoff from Smart Lifestyle. I’ll be setting up your system for you today. I must say, Mr Sugden, you have selected an incredible package. Your life will never be the same again.”
And thus begins an exciting thriller that will make you question your internet and social media addictions.

Sam Jardine is multifaceted. Sometimes he seems quite naïve yet strong and smart but usually one step behind most of the time. He grows into the role he is thrust in and in the end, it is his high ethics and morals that save him and those he cares about. He tends to be the type of person who settles and tries to make things flow, but then you see he is a much more complex person with desires and ethics that motivate him to be the knight on a white horse.

The Nocnista Agenda by Christopher Hepworth is full of twists and turns, the plot evolves realistically and excitedly. Drawing upon history, a secret society better known as a cult and a nation riddled with opportunistic people who would sell their mother for a dollar, The Nocnista Agenda is a nail biting thriller that you will not be able to put down. I was drawn in completely and couldn’t put the book down.

While Hepworth tells a complex tale, it is done in an easy flowing manner that sucks the reader right in and won’t let go until the end. Rich details, emotions and passion – that is what Hepworth gives to the readers. One can’t help but be riveted by the story and the characters. The playing football before a state dinner and then the betrayal … wow! Hepworth is a masterful story teller!

The Nocnista Agenda by Christopher Hepworth is an intriguing adventure that is action packed with deadly political agendas, past abuses, vengeance, and a strong lust for power. This not just a story about politics or nations in danger, and it is not just about morals and ethics – it is about so much more. Hepworth weaves a story line that demonstrates the differences in culture and societies and the differences in people.
While struggling to acquire data base storage, Sam Jardine meets a list of characters that will try to seduce him, beat him, outsmart him and save him. Jardine has his moments where he is strong yet weak, smart yet one step behind. He is a complex character that is driven by past demons and failures.

“She did not look back as the sounds of the old priest trying to break down the door of his side of the confessional box reverberated throughout the old church. She made a mental note to thank the carpenter for swapping the locks on the confessional box and adding the clasp to the grill just as she had instructed. … Natalya opened the heavy wooden doors of the old church and closed them behind her just as the grenade exploded with a ‘whump.’ The blast vaporized the confessional box and the old priest, …”

Hepworth writes strong women into his books and he does it well. The above quote taken from the book demonstrates Natalya’s thirst for vengeance and strength to carry it out as well as intelligence. Trust me when I say the priest was not as he appeared and deserved his fate. Harsh? Read it and find out! No one is truly as they appear and that is what keeps it nail biting and intense.

Hepworth has done it again. An excellent story told in rich details and descriptions. I loved it! I could not put it down. Hepworth does not allow the reader to get lost, rather he builds a strong connection between his characters and readers. You can not only see the Cossacks on the ridge, but you can feel the fear they induce and jubilation of Jardine when he sees them.

I look forward to more writings by Christopher Hepworth!

I love thrillers and the bigger the conspiracy, the better. Author Christopher Hepworth has proven that he can write an engaging and complex thriller with his last book, “The Sleepwalker Legacy”, and I had no qualms about snapping up his latest release. The story of Sam Jardine, a master negotiator who has a knack for getting in the midst of international conspiracies. This one involves a crazy media tycoon and a group who wish to bring the Russian empire back in all its greatness and fury. Another well-written and very fun read from Hepworth that I would definitely recommend.
